How To Build A Garden Arbor In 5 Days

Many of my first time clients are very surprised by how fast I build their project once I am on site. Since I work on one job at a time, a 5 day project usually takes 5 consecutive days from start to finish. -- especially if most of their experience is with contractors who move a crew around several jobs and end up taking a month to complete a project that only requires 40 to 80 hours of work.

To give you an idea of how I build, as well as how quickly, here is an example of how I built a redwood garden arbor in Pasadena, California over five days. This free standing garden arbor is approximately 12 feet long by 12 feet wide and 9 feet high.

Day One & Two

Set Column Bases

I set up my tools and mark out the post positions. Next, I dig holes for the four support posts and fill with them with concrete. Then I insert steel column bases (also known as stirrups) and let the concrete harden for 24 hours.

Day Two

Set Posts

After hand selecting all the materials I unload them at the site. Next, I install the vertical support posts and soak the bottom of each with preservative.

Day Three

Create Vertical Supports

Next, I create decorative notched cross pieces that will provide support for the overhead structure.

Day Three

Notch Beams

I notch the beams for added strength and visual appeal. Then I attach them with heavy duty screws and structural adhesive.

Day Three

Install Main Cross Beams

At the end of the day I install the first two main cross beams.

Day Four

Install Cross Rafters

Today I install the other two main beams to create a square frame for the rafters. Then I cut the rafter ends using a simple decorative pattern and start installing them.

Day Five

Box Posts

I finish installing all the rafters and add box trim to the bottom of each post to complete the arbor. After cleaning up the site and packing up my tools, my client and I do a walk thru and I present the bill.

A Few Weeks Later

After the wood has dried and seasoned, it is ready for painting. The Educated Painters of Pasadena do a great job and the arbor is ready to enjoy.
